Australia’s first NBN opens in Tasmania – offers blistering speeds 12 August 2010

Media Release

Australia’s first NBN opens in Tasmania – offers blistering speeds 12 August 2010

NBN Tasmania today celebrated the official launch of Australia’s first national broadband network at a community event in Midway Point, northeast of Hobart.

Midway Point is one of three communities in Tasmania where homeowners and businesses can now order superfast fibre-to-the-home broadband services via one of a growing number of participating retail service providers (RSPs) – currently including iiNet, Primus and Internode. Designed to deliver download speeds of up to 100Mbps*, the network is also operating in Smithton in the northwest and Scottsdale in the northeast as part of the NBN Tasmania stage one rollout.

Green ICT E-Waste

Abstract:E-Waste, Electronic and Electrical waste, provides significant opportunity and threat. E-waste contains valuable metals such as gold, silver, copper and nickel. It also contains expensive to produce and relatively easy to recycle aluminum and heavy metals lead and mercury. However, significant amounts of E-waste ends up buried in landfill, from where the lead and mercury leaches out, contaminates soil and water and enters the human food chain.

Australian Government Data Centre Strategy 2010-2025

Government spends about $170 million annually on electricity for its data centres, of which ICT uses only $70 million. The cooling for the ICT and other data centre support systems uses the remainder. Modern data centres are more efficient in their use of electricity. It is estimated that using modern data centres would avoid $35 million per annum in electricity costs alone.
