On 23 October 2007 Sydney's new theatre turned 75 years old. New Theatre is one of the oldest continuously performing theatre groups in Australia. Of the 5 major new theatre League groups that emerged in Australia in the 1930s, Sydney's is the only one that has survived into the 21st century.
Throughout 2007, alongside our regular programme, we will be celebrating this landmark achievement with some special events and additional programmes, and the release of the 75th Anniversary History Booklet.
Several major new theatre anniversaries have been marked by the production of a History Booklet, the last major version being that done for the 60th anniversary in 1992. We are close to finishing an update for the 75th for production early in 2007. It will be available, for a modest price, from the theatre.
The Mitchell Library will also be devoting a couple of its display cases to new theatre material later this year. The Library periodically purchases archives from new theatre and now holds a very large and invaluable resource.
The memories of people with a long-standing commitment to new theatre are being recorded. This project will provide a valuable resource and addition to our archives.
