List of Works in order of display.

  1. blue multistrand necklace with small screenNeo-plastic Nudibranch Neckpiece (2011)

This wearable work is made out of plastic bags as well as bits and pieces that I've collected - mostly plastic, some pearls. They have been combined with a USB that features images of amazing sea creatures called nudibranchs. These creatures are incredibly diverse in colour and form – different species live in different waters all over the world.

This piece draws an association between the plastic waste floating in the water (often washed into waterways through stormwater drains) and the impact this has on the species that live there. By mimicking the form of precious jewellery, the work asks the wearer - what do we place value on?

The rowans or mountain-ashes is a deciduous tree of the Rose family. White flowers bloom in summer time and the red berries in autumn are made into a beautiful red fruit liquor.

  6. I have been interested for some time in how to depict the flow of water in a medium like linocut that lacks the fluidity of oils or water colour. Urban waterways like Johnston’s Creek, now confined within the walls of a stormwater channel, seem to provide a metaphor for this dilemma. - Sue Toohey

My work is inspired by unusual forms in nature. The biochemistry of life forms is reflected by the randomness of the medium as it develops under extreme conditions. The result is neither positive of negative but takes the viewer into a powerful and strange land. - Margot Alexander

  3. round object with feathersBalance (It works by the energy of light) II and III (2011)

These solar powered toys were pulled apart then remade into whimsical objects with the addition of emu feathers and papier mache. When exposed to sunlight, the ‘wings’ move up and down in somewhat jerky movements – small, futile flaps or short, sharp breaths. These objects refer to the potential of renewable energy as a way for us to regain balance with the delicate biosphere that we are surrounded by.

  4. necklace made of bits of plasticGuilty plastic bag stash (2010)

Guilty plastic bag stash adapts the indigenous tradition of string making to the urban environment. The string is made from plastic bags using the same technique and the decorative elements such as soy sauce containers, parts of bottles, citrus fruit nets and industrial offcuts – all abundant waste in our urban environment.

I try to say no to the question ‘Would you like a bag with that?’ I think of how the plastic bag will take many years to break down. It might end up in the water and harm a sea creature who mistakes it for food. Instead, I carry the item or use a canvas bag I keep in my handbag.
