Whites Creek Wetlands

Whites Creek Wetlands - full of frogs and native fish, this is an aquatic ecosystem on the edge of Leichhardt and Annandale designed to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from polluted storm-water. Walking down on a warm spring night during a full moon, the sound of the water flowing and singing frogs makes you feel like you're somewhere out in the country rather than in the Inner West. It is one of my favourite places (not just because it has a treehouse!). - Joel Tarling

Annandale - a discovery in progress

Being an amateur but keen photographer, Susanne hopes that you enjoy sharing these snippets of Annandale - a discovery in progress.

In December 2001, the Sydney bushfires were horrific.
Annandale was close to the fires - you could see burnt leaves dropping from the sky.
Our local bush became a refuge for some of those who could escape the flames.
In early 2002, a bird call was heard that was new to my ear.
The bird in the picture was making the call and was tracked to Spindler Park in North Annandale.
This dirty grey forlorn creature called and called and called. Four days later, to the Valley's relief, there was a reply from the fig trees in Hogan Park.
A rain then revealed the true colours of this refugee. smartain po box 1 annandale nsw 2038

www.isis.aust.com/annandale/frogs.htm An expert at hiding, this striped marsh frog is unusually visible on sandstone.
Seen in a local garden on 13 December 2003, it appears not to be the same type of frog seen below - but it is.
This frog was seen on 28 February 2004 attempting to hide itself in leaf litter in the same garden.
In 2008, among other things, a chorus of frogs can now be heard. smartain po box 1 annandale nsw 2038

text and photographs of Willy Wagtail Annandale a discovery in progress
Willy Wagtails www.isis.aust.com/annandale/willy.htm Willys are known for their dances. On 8 May 2005, this Willy was seen doing its 'this is my place' dance in the direction of two Noisy Minas in Federal park. On 27 December 2003, these two Willys were seen 'not talking' to each other at Johnstons Creek in Spindler Park.
A walk along Johnstons Creek will give you an opportunity to see a Willy or two for yourself as they are permanent residents. Spring is the time for nest spotting. On 5 October 2005, this broody Willy was spotted nesting in plantings next to Chapman Road. Some may recognise the pink background as the 'carpet factory' wall. Some say when you see a Willy- visitors are coming.smartain po box 1 annandale nsw 2038 www.isis.aust.com/annandale/ by Susanne Martain

An old polluted drain flows between Annandale and Lilyfield. the bush was chopped down a hundred years ago, swamps filled in and Whites Creek turned into a stormwater drain.
