Straw Poll on how different browsers rendered XHTML/HTML4.01 webpages revealed quite a variation (shown below) in how Alt Text and Backgrounds are rendered.

Konqueror 3.5.5 on SuSE linux 10.2

standard configuration is to not load images or java, cookies and javascript are disabled, flash is not installed.

travel.shtml (XHTML Transitional) - with standard configuration, the Alt Text isn't displayed.

test.shtml (xhtml strict) - with standard configuration, the Alt Text isn't displayed
