Discover the stories of the Heritage Streetscapes of this urban village in Sydney’s inner west. Annandale is bounded by Sydney Harbour, Parramatta Road and two creeks. Gas lights, horses and trams have adorned the streets. You'll learn the answers to these questions and more as well as understanding more about the brewing process during this 1.5 hr talk which mixes hands-on tasting of beer with stories, demonstrations and a brewery tour conducted by Peter Philip, founder and head brewer of Wayward Brewing.

Aircraft on the ground1940s Annandale: A Short Guided Walk

The 1940s saw Annandale's factories turned to the war effort. Gunsights and Mosquito Bombers were churned out and bomb shelters erected. The end of the decade saw the absorption of the Annandale, Glebe and Balmain boroughs into the Leichhardt Municipality. The one hour walk will be guided by Marghanita da Cruz, who has been publishing the Anecdotal History of Annandale on the Web since 1998 and guiding historical walks since 2011.

Annandale Eco Heritage Tour (walk)

Jason Chatwin will give a guided eco/nature foreshore walk of Johnston’s Creek, Rozelle Bay, Federal Park & Bicentennial Park Precinct.
This tour will cover the native flora and fauna of these areas, changes to the landscape outlining the original and modern foreshore, bush regeneration including the salt marsh wetlands and proposed upgrades to the park precinct. Presented by:Leichhardt Library

The Annandale Borough's Health inspector's report for the fortnight ending 29 Oct 1943, recommended approval of licenses for butcher's shops at 78 Booth St (V Dommett), cnr Nelson and Parramatta Road (E LAwrence), 12 Johnston St (LJ Osborne) and on Parramatta Road (H Smithson) as well as Refreshment Rooms at 35, 51, 89, 91, 137, 185, 247, 121 Parramatta Rd and 2a, 120, 126 Johnston St. In 2016, there are no butcher's shops - however there are five small grocery outlets, two of which stock fresh meat, and numerous cafes and restaurants.

In 1944, Minute 204 of the Annandale Borough Council approved licenses for butcher shops: W. Hector at 55 Booth St; T Miller at 18 Trafalgar St; G Gower at Parramatta Rd; J Wilkinson 119 Johnston St; T Elliot 30 Kentville Ave and refreshment rooms: E Purcell at 31a Parramatta Rd (Minute Books [Municipality of Annandale] /Minute Book Start date: 03 May 1943 End date: 23 Dec 1948, Series Number 16797 Box Number 9, State Records NSW).

The 2016 Annandale Heritage Festival theme is Food and Drink business as usual. Bounded by Parramatta Road, Sydney Harbour, Johnston and White's Creeks, Annandale is a designated heritage conservation area. Many individual sites are listed on the local, state and National Trust registers.

Annandale is home to ove 8700 people. It has 4 bakeries, 6 Burger Cafes/Fish & Chips shops, 5 Restaurants, 10 Cafes, a Sushi train, 8 grocery outlets, 2 small bars, 4 pubs, 2 bottle shops, a cooking school, caterers, coffee roasters and beer brewers. Most of these little businesses are located along Parramatta Road, Johnston and Booth Streets, but a few are tucked away in quiet streets.

Well served by bus and tram, the Annandale Heritage Festival offers guided walk, talks and a free alfresco exhibition. There are also Self Guided Walk, numerous permanent National Trust plaques along the footpaths. Over 1200 Annandale ANZACs are remembered on WW1 memorials and honour boards scattered around Annandale.

Discover the stunning sandstone motifs designed by Thomas Vallance Wran, great-great grandfather of Neville Wran.
His first major commission, both astonishing and revolutionary, was resurrected in 1891 on the facade of Annandale Uniting Church at 81 Johnston Street.
